eternal torment

You’re Not a Spider

You’re Not a Spider

Edwards says, “The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider…abhors you,” but at least Edwards acts like someone who believes his own doctrine. He boldly preaches it instead of neatly tucking it away in a Statement of Faith among the dusty cobwebs of his church website and defending it in backhanded, private ways.

Why Chan Can’t Erase Hell: A Sense of Urgency

This chapter serves as a confessional of sorts, for all believers who hold to the doctrine of eternal torment in hell yet don’t act like they truly believe their own doctrine. Chan writes, “A sense of urgency over the reality of hell should recharge our passion for the gospel as it did for Paul, who, ‘knowing the fear of the Lord,’ persuaded people to believe (2 Cor. 5:11).” The unsuspecting reader might assume that Paul hints at the prospect of eternal torment in hell for those who do not believe, and that this dread is what motivates Paul or gives him a passion for the gospel. This is impossible, for several reasons, but before we explore these reasons, we must first look at the context in which Paul’s words, “knowing the fear of the Lord,” appear.

Dear pastor, please open mouth and insert foot.

Please read and carefully consider this scripture: Wherefore Jesus also, that He should be hallowing the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate.  Now then, we may be coming out to Him outside the camp, carrying His reproach.  Hebrews 13:12-13. The other day I listened to a local…

Costello, Rezner, Gore, Manson, and Cash

Elvis Costello asks an important question in one of his songs.  Here are the lyrics: Is this not a pretty tale? Is this not a riddle? A bow shoots arrows through the air, a bow drags notes from a fiddle But who is the beau of a young girl’s heart that a…

Revelation 3

I said in the previous blog “Revelation 1-2” If salvation means that sin and death will not have the final say over you – then yes, your salvation is secure.  It was secured for you two thousand years ago.  If salvation means “going to Heaven when you die” then I…

McArthur’s Bell-Bashing is a Blessing

I have a few John MacArthur books on my shelf.  Truth is truth wherever you find it, and sometimes MacArthur speaks the truth.  Sometimes. Here lately, he’s been spewing a bunch of unholy chunks of bunk.  I stopped by his website to see what he’s been up to lately, and…
